Nowadays, tubes and pipes continue to become more and more important in a range of industries such as the oil and gas, water treatment and the automotive industry. Tubes provide light weight, excellent rigidity, and low cost while steel pipes are still a popular choice for fluid transportation. In particular, tubular components have become more sophisticated, and often require a special weld joint in their construction. Tubular joints represent an ideal application for Magnetically Impelled Arc Butt (MIAB) welding, since the tube geometry plays a significant role in controlling the arc path, which promotes uniform heating of the joint. This process relies on very complex interactions between the arc, magnetic field and upsetting force. MIAB is a highly efficient energy-saving process of welding, assuring the quality of its weld.  Often deemed as a revolutionary welding process due its favourable advantages such as time saving of up to 90%, no filler material, less defects compared to fusion welding process and many others, This presentation explores the possibility to a wider range of applications in the oil and gas industry with specific case studies.
